Teen Whitening Trend: AACD Dentist Shares Advice

The media tends to set the standard for how young people think they should look, explained Kellee Kattleman Stanton, DDS, family and cosmetic dentist, George Dental Group in Eagan, Minnesota. Teenagers want the beautiful, white smiles they see in magazines and TV.

Dr. Stanton ranked the most popular procedures for teens in her Minneapolis-area practice: whitening, cosmetic bonding, cosmetic re-contouring, and tooth replacement for missing or deformed incisors.

As for whitening, the number one cosmetic procedure, parents should be aware of some concerns before seeking professional treatment for children and teens. Dr. Stanton provided the answers to common whitening questions asked by parents:

Q. Whats the average age when kids can whiten their teeth?

A. We look at each case individually. A major consideration is if the teen’s yellow tooth color is so socially unacceptable that it is affecting their self-esteem. We first educate parents about what causes teeth to yellow, then explain whitening benefits and risks. Generally, teens are safe to whiten once all of their permanent teeth have come in.

Q. What causes yellow teeth in kids?

A. The most common reason young people have yellow teeth, besides genetic factors, is the lack of good brushing and flossing habits. Another cause may be the antibiotics that many teens take for acne. Also if a teen drinks a lot of dark colored soda or pigmented foods such as tomato sauce, that can impact tooth color as well. The key is to brush and floss after each meal and visit the dentist at least twice a year for cleanings.

Q. Is there societal pressure to whiten at younger ages?

A. Sometimes, the whitening request is driven by the parent. However,?girls have a higher awareness of themselves and how they project to others. Boys on the other hand, tend to not really notice (if at all) until they are in the work force or looking for that special someone to settle down with.

Q. Should teens whiten less often than adults?

A. Yes, because they typically respond faster and should only whiten as needed. In my practice, we use a lower percentage of whitening gel.

Q. Would either in-office whitening or home whitening kits be acceptable?

A. In-office works best since it allows the practitioner more control by doing the some of the whitening up front. The caution with young teeth is that the sensitivity after whitening can be greater, therefore it is important to?manage?the whitening process.

Q. Are there any other concerns?

A. When it comes to whitening a young persons teeth, its okay for a parent or dentist to say no or not right now.

A voice actor actually works harder than a Hollywood superstar. It is quite tough for a voice actor to put feelings and emotions to what he is reading, all the while knowing that he’s not seen on screen. The voice actor must be able to empathize with the persona that he portrays and make sure that he breathes life into the script. It is in this realm where voice over training is essential.

Voice over artists are able to learn the craft of voice acting and find good employment in this field by going through voice over training. There are 1000s of cartoon and animated TV shows, web shows, TV/radio advertisements, web videos, and movies being made continually. Moreover, each movie/TV show has a cast of more than 20-30 characters. There are worldwide opportunities galore for a voice actor.

Voice over training course – the basic skills that you ought to have

Diction is one of the most vital tools of the trade. The student must have perfect enunciation and therefore must attend speech classes to get his diction properly. Every voice over actor has two roles to fulfill – “lending voice” and “acting.” So, perfect diction is not enough to start voice over training – the student must also enroll in an acting course prior to joining the voice over course.

What does a voiceover training program teach?

Assessing and interpreting commercial copy for announcer and real-person roles are learned by the student. Interpreting narrative copy, as well as technical copy, are learned as well. Students learn to coordinate the mind, mouth and voice efficiently, so that they may be able to sound really true to the personality they are playing. Taking direction is also mastered by the student.

A great voice actor training program makes students read, record, play back, listen, and then do it all over again until they get it right. Students warm-up and perform vocal exercises and learn techniques like timing, inflection, and articulation. They figure out how to maintain their vocal health. When students are already half-way into the voice over training program, they become skilled at using and adjusting pitch, tone, volume and delivery speed to cater to various types of jobs.

After the main training is over, students learn how to promote their skills, tap the appropriate contacts, and get voice over work. The course instructors also help them create a voice over demo for their portfolio. A solid voice over training program provides students the opportunity to work in a real studio and understand what they should and shouldn’t do in a sound booth and when behind the microphone.

Choosing a voice over training course

There are two facets to voice training. Students who are interested in selling must opt for a commercial voice over course. Commercial voice overs are used for selling. TV advertisements, radio ads, phone and other media feature these voice overs. The voice over course also addresses selling skills because all commercial voice overs sell a product or a service. Acting skills are not dealt with by this course. Students who are interested in showbiz must opt for a TV and movie voice over and dubbing program. Such courses require lip-synching, and so the voice over actor has to learn acting skills too.
